All about the Keyboard


A Summary of the Special key Functions
Name Image Function
Escape Key It's function is to step you back from the current option.
Backspace Key When typing, Bck Sp or Backspace moves the "Flashing cursor" back to the LEFT, wiping out letters in its path.
Tab Key Moves the flashing cursor to the next position in a table or indents the cursor position to the right.
Caps Lock When the caps lock in ON the keyboard will type CAPITAL LETTERS.
Shift Key Hold down a Shift key with one hand and press keys with the other hand to type the occassional CAPITAL LETTER or to type the upper characters on some keys, for example on the second row.
Enter or Carriage Return When wordprocessing, Enter or Return acts like the carriage return on an electric typewriter. It ends typing on that line and places the flashing cursor at the beginning of the next line. It is also used to enter a select into a program.
Control Many programs use Crtl (Control) and Alt keys with the letter keys to do useful functions. Some of these functions are listed on the righthand side of the EDIT Menu in most programs (for example MS Word)

The Space Bar Pressing the space bar, moves the flashing cursor one space to the left. This puts spaces between words.
Windows Start Key It's function is to display the start menu.
Windows Menu Key It's function is to display the mouse right button menu. The menu that appears is dependent on the postion of the mouse pointer.
Print Screen This places a copy of the current screen onto the clip board ready to be pasted into the same or other programs.
Scroll Lock Locks the flashing cursor into it's current position..
Pause This pauses the current operation (sometimes!).
Insert Allows "inserting" text rather than over typing. The inserting takes place at the flashing cursor.A/font>
Delete Deletes text to the RIGHT of the flashing cursor. Place the flashing cursor in front of text, press delete.
Home Jumps the flashing cursor to the beginning of a line of text.
End Jumps the flashing cursor to the end of a line of text.
Page Up Moves the view up one screen.
Page Down Moves the view down one screen.
The Arrow Keys Arrow keys move the flashing cursor around the text. They can also be used to move selected graphic objects.
Num Lock Num Locks switches on the Numeric key pad.
Divide Divides with the calculator or in constructing spreadsheet formula.
Mulitply Multiplies with the calculator or in constructing spreadsheet formula.
Subtract Subtracts with the calculator or in constructing spreadsheet formula.
Add Adds with the calculator or in constructing spreadsheet formula.
